Discovering Paradise: The Best Time of Year for a Virgin Islands Vacation

What’s the best time for a Virgin Islands vacation? We think it’s always a great time to visit, but as St. Thomas locals, we may be a bit biased. The fact is that the Virgin Islands has three distinct travel seasons, each with its own advantages. Start by asking yourself what you want from your trip. An escape from the winter cold? A beach all to yourself? Once you have the answer, read on to begin planning your U.S.V.I. getaway!

High Season: December-March

It’s no surprise this is the most popular time for a Virgin Islands vacation. While most of the country is battling blizzards, we’re enjoying sun-filled days and temperatures in the mid-80s. The islands are buzzing with fun and excitement - you’ll love Miracle on Main Street on St. Thomas and the St. Croix Crucian Christmas Festival in December, the St. Croix International Regatta in February and the St. Croix Mardi Gras Annual Parade and St. Thomas International Rolex Cup Regatta in March.

Average Temperatures: Low 80s/Mid-70s

Pros: Mild weather, little rain and an array of events to choose from

Cons: Bigger crowds

Planning Tip: Reserve accommodations and book excursions well in advance, as both go quickly this time of year. See our properties and availability here.

Shoulder Season: April-May and November

If you’re looking for great weather and fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons are an excellent time for a Virgin Islands vacation. Temperatures are still comfortable (mid-70s to mid-80s) and the islands are less crowded than they are during peak season. You can enjoy Carnival on St. Thomas in April, a week-long celebration with parades, live music, local cuisine and of course, iconic Moko Jumbie stilt performers.

Cons: A slightly higher chance of rain than the dry winter season

Planning Tip: Celebrate Thanksgiving or Easter in style! Our concierge service can arrange for one of our award-winning local chefs to prepare a holiday meal right in the comfort of your own private villa.

Off-Peak Season: June-October

Yes, this is our hottest and rainiest season, but don’t let that fool you. It’s also the season of amazingly warm water and quiet beaches. Nature lovers rejoice: this is the perfect time to soak in the lush greenery, vibrant flowers and maybe even catch a peek of baby sea turtles as they hatch. Don’t miss Carnival on St. John in June and Emancipation Day celebrations in July.
