Dreaming of turquoise water, white-sand beaches and island sunshine? Flying to St. Thomas is easier than many travelers realize. With direct flights to St. Thomas available from numerous U.S. cities, reaching the U.S. Virgin Islands can be surprisingly convenient. Whether it's your first visit or your fifth, these St. Thomas travel tips will help make your arrival smooth and stress-free.

1. Book Early

St. Thomas is a popular destination year-round, but flights tend to fill up quickly during winter, spring break and over holidays. Booking your flight several months in advance can often help you secure better fares and more convenient routes—especially with the recent stoppage of Spirit Airlines flights to the island.

2. Sit on the Left

You'll be treated to a stunning glimpse of the West End before landing at Cyril E. King Airport, the main airport in St. Thomas.

3. Pack Smart

When packing, think simplicity. You'll need swimsuits, sandals, sunglasses, sun protection in the form of hats, rash guards and coverups, and lightweight, casual clothing for shopping and restaurants. Depending on how adventurous you're feeling, you might also want to include a pair of shoes for hiking and water shoes for navigating rocky areas and tidepools. Cosmetics and sunscreen can be brought from home or purchased duty-free on the island.

You will need a driver's license or government-issued ID, credit cards and some cash in U.S. dollars for taxis and tips. If you're a U.S. citizen, you can leave your passport at home unless you plan on traveling to the nearby British Virgin Islands.

Finally, consider your arrival time. If your villa check-in is at 4 p.m. and you arrive at 11 a.m., you may want to throw a swimsuit in your carry-on so you can head to the beach while you wait. Check with us for lunch and beach recommendations for your first day!

4. Plan Your Airplane Exit

Passengers arriving at Cyril E. King Airport in St. Thomas depart directly onto the tarmac rather than a jet bridge. The walk to the terminal is short, but you'll want to alert the cabin crew in advance if you or someone in your party needs help navigating the stairs from the airplane to the ground.

5. Arrange Transportation Before You Land

After flying to St. Thomas, you'll need transportation from the airport to your villa, condo or resort. There are no ride-sharing services on St. Thomas, which leaves you with three options:

Renting a car, which gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace. You'll arrange airport pickup with your rental car company, and they'll take you to the rental car lot outside of airport grounds to pick up your vehicle. Note that drivers drive on the left in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Private transportation, which ensures that your driver will meet you at the terminal, assist with luggage and transport you directly to your villa. If you're an Island Luxury guest, please let us know if you'd like us to arrange private transportation for you.

Taxi, which can be hailed outside the terminal as we've mentioned above. Drivers charge a per-person rate and luggage fee based on your destination.

6. Download Important Information Before You Travel

Save airline confirmations, accommodation details, rental car reservations, and directions to your phone before departure, and print them out as an emergency backup. Having offline access is always helpful in case you have poor reception or your phone battery dies.

7. Arrive Early for Your Return Flight

It's never fun to leave St. Thomas, but you can make departure day less stressful by giving yourself plenty of extra time. The Cyril E. King Airport is known for longer departure procedures than many mainland airports because travelers must complete both U.S. Customs and TSA screening before reaching their gates. We recommend arriving three hours before your departure to complete security and arrive at your gate.

8. Consider a Red Cap Service

If you need help with luggage or are worried that you're going to miss your flight, consult with one of the Red Cap airport porters. For a small per-bag fee, they can help  you with your bags and may also be able to speed up the check-in and customs process.

Flying to St. Thomas is easy, convenient and the start of a tropical adventure you'll never forget. If you have more questions about flying to St. Thomas, please contact us!
