How Did Carnival Begin?

The first St. Thomas Carnival was held more than 100 years ago as a way to celebrate the island’s traditions. In the modern version of Carnival, you’ll find gorgeous costumes, parades for young and old, live music and some of the best food anywhere in the Caribbean!

St. Thomas Carnival Highlights

  • J’ouvert, Sunrise on May 1

Don’t miss J’ouvert, a pre-dawn street party. You can dance through the streets to the beat of soca music while you enjoy Carnival in style.

  • Children’s Parade, 11 a.m. on May 2

St. Thomas’s youngest residents show off their skills in choreographed performances and festive costumes. The winners of St. Thomas’s Junior Miss and Petite Princess competitions will make their appearance, along with local school bands and musical groups.

  • Adult Parade 10 a.m., and Fireworks, 9 p.m. May 3

Carnival ends with its biggest event, the Adult Parade. This showcase of glittering costumes, dancing and music can last up to seven hours, as troupes wind their way down Main Street in Charlotte Amalie. The grand finale of the festivities is a fireworks display over Charlotte Amalie harbor.
