Often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world, Trunk Bay is a must-see stop if you're visiting St. John. We're sharing our tips for maximizing your time on one of the most iconic beaches in the Caribbean.
Why Visit Trunk Bay
Trunk Bay is located within the Virgin Islands National Park, which means this beach is pristine, undeveloped and free from hotels, restaurants and other trappings of modern life. The sapphire-blue water is calm, warm and shallow, making it ideal for snorkeling and playing in the waves. Trunk Bay is also home to a unique underwater snorkeling trail and some excellent snorkeling spots surrounding Trunk Cay, a rocky outcropping just off the shore.
Getting There
If you're staying on St. Thomas, there are four ways you can get to Trunk Bay:
Take the passenger ferry, then grab a taxi from Cruz Bay. Ferries depart from Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook to St. John multiple times throughout the day, and the ferry ride is approximately 20 minutes. From there, you can catch one of the open-air taxis to Trunk Bay. The taxi ride is about 15 minutes from Cruz Bay, but please note that drivers may wait until the taxi is full before departing.
Take the car ferry and drive to Trunk Bay. The car ferry allows you to drive your vehicle onboard the ferry and transport it to St. John. You'll exit the ferry at Cruz Bay, then follow the North Shore Road about four miles to Trunk Bay.
Book a group tour. Island tours often include a stop at Trunk Bay, as well as a stop at the photo overlook.
Charter a boat. Chartering a boat allows you to work with your captain to design the perfect day at sea, including a visit to Trunk Bay.
What to Do at Trunk Bay
Snorkel the Underwater Trail
One of Trunk Bay's most unique features is its underwater snorkeling trail. Marked with plaques along the ocean floor, this self-guided experience introduces you to coral formations and marine life in a way that's both fun and educational. Expect to see colorful fish, sea fans, and maybe even a sea turtle if you're lucky.
Soak up the Sun
Bring a towel or rent a chair and enjoy the stunning scenery and soft white sand that makes this beach famous.
Take in the Views from Above
Before heading down to the beach, stop at the overlook on North Shore Road. It's one of the most photographed spots on the island--and for good reason.
Grab a Bite
There's a snack shack near the beach entrance where you can grab light lunch fare like sandwiches, chips and drinks.
Tips for Your Visit to Trunk Bay
Parking is limited. If you're driving, you may want to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to ensure a parking spot.
Trunk Bay is the only beach in the U.S. Virgin Islands with an entrance fee. The $5 per-person amenity fee can be paid at the entrance booth.
Snorkeling gear and beach chairs are available for rent.
Wear reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the coral reef.
